Introduction: 1 Corinthians 15:1-4,

MOREOVER, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

1 Peter 3:18,

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

This study is about the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.  That is, it will cover the death of Christ which is according to the Scriptures, dying the Just for the unjust, was buried for three days and three nights, and was raised back to life for our justification just as the Bible says.  Though by no means will it be exhaustive yet it will be detailed enough for the lost to come to Christ and be saved; for the Sunday school teacher to take to class, as well as for the minister to take to the pulpit to use.  The child of God should be able to read it often to be prepared to lead the lost to a saving knowledge of the Lord.  This author makes no claim to originality in all of its particulars.

The death of Christ on the cross is: divine in its provision, essential in its necessity, voluntary in its nature, substitutionary in its offering, sufficient in its atonement, and complete in its issue.  Howbeit, the Law must be upheld, its dignity defended, and it’s just penalty paid in order to save the lost sinner. It is my hope that we can rejoice in all that the Saviour has done for us in the Gospel.  May this be true to the Holy Scriptures, the King James Bible and most importantly honoring to Christ.

In the first section we deal with the cross work of Christ, called the Atonement. In the second section we will deal with His burial. The burial will be in two parts mainly, three days and three nights His body lay in the grave.  The second part we’ll be considering why is the burial of Christ part of the saving Gospel.  Finally, we will study about the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, and all right from the pages of God’s word.

This study about the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ can be used to witness and win the lost to a saving knowledge of Christ; it can be used for a preacher to take to the pulpit and preach; and it can be used by the Sunday school class teacher.  But however it is used I trust that it’ll be used for the Glory of God. I do not claim originality for all of the points for many of them come from Bro. Tom Hayes my friend and brother in Christ.  One thing is for sure never be ashamed of the gospel.

I.     THE VIOLENT NATURE OF CHRIST’S DEATH (Personal Suffering)

          A. Physical Suffering:

Psalms 22:16, For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

Isaiah 53:5,  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Zechariah 12:10, And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. 13:6, And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

Matthew 20:19, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.

Mark 15:25,  And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.

Luke 24:39-40, Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.  And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

John 20:25, 27-28, The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.  Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.  And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

 

                  2. His Head and His Face

 

Isaiah 50:6,  I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.                                                                                                                                                       

Matthew 26:67, Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,

Matthew 27:29-30,   And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying,  Hail, King of the Jews!  And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

Mark 14:65,  And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands. 15:16-19,  And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Prætorium; and they call together the whole band.  And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,  And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!  And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

Luke 22:63-65, And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.  And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?  And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.

We will leave off John 19:1-3 since we learn no more from them than already considered.

 

                  3. His Heart and His Flesh

 

Psalm 22:14-17,  I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.  My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.  For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.  I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. 

Psalm 69:20, Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

Psalm 129:3,  The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.

Isaiah 50:6,  I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

Isaiah 52:14,  As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: 53:5-6, But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Matthew 27:26, 31, 33,  Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.  And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.  And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,

Psalm 22:1, 20-21, MY God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. Save me from the lion’s mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.

Psalm 38:2, For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.

Psalm 42:7, Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

Psalm 88:7, Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.

Lamentations 1:12-14,   Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.  From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: he hath made me desolate and faint all the day.  The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.

Isaiah 53:10, 12, Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.  Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Matthew 26:36-38, Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.  And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.  Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.

Matthew 27:46,  And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Mark 14:33-34,  And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;  And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.

Luke 22:44, And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

Philippians 2:8,  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.      

Hebrews 5:7-8,  Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

 

                 2. His Strength In Judgment

 

Isaiah 53:7-8, He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.  He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

Christ was never kept in prison, nor did He have a fair trial; so the idea here is that He was denied justice and judgment.  He was cut off from the land of the living, that is He died unjustly from the physical standpoint. Who will be able to declare the wickedness of His generation?  He was considered too wicked to be given a fair trial.  Though Jesus was declared innocent of all charges by His judge in Matthew 27:4, and others, yet He was denied freedom by His enemies.  They brought pressure to bear upon His judge who then thought it best to turn Him over to them that he might save himself from being accused of treason to Caesar.

Daniel 9:26, ...shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself:...

Matthew 26:57-68; 27:1-31.  A miscarriage of justice to say the least.

 

                  3. His Suffering For Sin

 

From the Isaiah 53:4-6, 8, 10-12 we learn that Christ suffered of God:

He was stricken of God

Smitten of God   

Afflicted of God

Wounded for our transgressions

God laid upon Him the iniquity of us all

It pleased the LORD to bruise Him

The LORD put Him to grief

Made His soul an offering for sin

For the transgression of My people was He stricken

He shall bear their iniquities

Poured out His soul unto death

And He bare the sin of many

John 10:17-18,  Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.   No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

John 19:30,  When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

Matthew 17:22-23,   And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:  And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.

Matthew 20:18-19, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,  And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.

Matthew 26:37-38, 42, And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.  Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.  He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

Hebrews 7:22,  By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.

Hebrews 9:15-18, 20, 24,  And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.  For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.  For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.  Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.  Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.  For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:    

 

III.  THE VITAL NATURE OF CHRIST’S DEATH  (Prophetical Scriptures)

A. It Was Vital For Revelation in that:

 

Matthew 11:25-30,   At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.  Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.  All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Matthew 16:15-17,   He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.  And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

John 6:37-40, 44-48, All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.  For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.  And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.  And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.   No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.  Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.  I am that bread of life.

Isaiah 54:13,  And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.

Jeremiah 31:34, And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

          C. It Was Vital For Reconciliation

 

Romans 5:10-11,   For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Colossians 1:20-22, And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.  And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled  In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

 

IV. THE VICARIOUS NATURE OF CHRIST’S DEATH  (Penal Substitution)

1. His Crucifixion Preaches Substitution

(Penal: of, relating to, or involving punishment, penalties, punitive of offenders, retributive, corrective; an act or offense punishable by law.)

 

Isaiah 53:6,  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.                                                                                                                            

Romans 3:25, Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Romans 4:25, Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Romans 5:8, But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

1 Corinthians 15:3,  how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

                  1. From Adam’ Sin To Man:  Romans 5:12, Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 1 Corinthians 15:21-22,  For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.  For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

                  3.                THE ACTUAL BURIAL OF CHRIST

 

V.   THE VERIFYING NATURE OF CHRIST’S DEATH  (Part In Salvation)

      A. His Burial Was Prophetic And Settled:

 

Isaiah 53:9, And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

 

      B. His Burial Was Plain And Sure:      

 

Matthew 27:57-66, When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathæa, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:  He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.  And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,  And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.  And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.  Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,  Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.  Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.  Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.  So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

Mark 15:43-46,  Joseph of Arimathæa, an honourable counseller, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.  And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.  And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.  And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

Luke 23:50-53,   And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counseller; and he was a good man, and a just:  (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathæa, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.  This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.  And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

John 19:33-35, 38-39a,  But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:  But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.  And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe...  And after this Joseph of Arimathæa, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night,....

 

      C.  His Body Was Covered In Perfumes and Spices:

 

John 19:39-40,  And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.  Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

 

      D. In His Burial He Was Placed And Secured:

                                                                                                                                

Matthew 27:64-66,  Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.  Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.  So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

 

     E. His Burial Was For A Permanent Sequence: (Three Days & Three Nights)

                                                                                              72 hrs. In the grave

Matthew 12:40,  For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 16:21,   From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

Matthew 17:23, And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry.

Matthew 20:18-19, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,  And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.

Matthew 27:62-64,   Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,  Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. Mark 8:31, And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

Mark 9:31,  For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

Mark 10:33-34,   Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:  And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

(According to the laws of simple and compound probability these 10 details of prophecy have one chance in 1,024 of  being fulfilled.)

Luke 9:21-22, And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 

Luke 13:32-33, And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected.  Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

Luke 18:32-33,  For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on:  And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.

Luke 24:7, 20-21, 44-46, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again...And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.  But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done..And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.  Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,  And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

John 2:19-21,  Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.  Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?  But he spake of the temple of his body.

The Importance Of The Burial of Christ In The Gospel Is Seen In The Following:

 

I.   SANCTITY OF HIS BODY  (Because of the following-dignity of a burial)

 

Psalm 16:9-10, Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.  For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Matthew 1:21, 23,  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.  Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Luke 1:35,  And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Colossians 2:9,  For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

1 Timothy 3:16, And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

II.  SINLESS BODY

 

Isaiah 42:21,” The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.” (Christ honored the Law)

Ezekiel 18:4, 20, Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

John 8:29, 46, And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

Romans 3:24-26, Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;  To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.                                                                                                                                 

Romans 5:6-11, For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.  And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. 

Romans 8:32-34,  He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?  Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.  Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Galatians 1:4, Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

Galatians 2:20,  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

1 Timothy 2:6, Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Hebrews 2:9-10, 14-15, 17,   But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.  For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.  Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

Hebrews 7:27, Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

Hebrews 9:12, 14, 26, 28,  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?  For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.  So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Hebrews 10:10, 12, 14,  By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.  But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;.  For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Hebrews 13:12, Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

1 Peter 1:18-19, Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

1 Peter 2:21, 24,  For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Revelation 5:9,  And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

 

IV. SIGN OF BLIGHT  (Cursed: Left Unburied)

 

Exodus 13:13, And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem.

(An ass’s first colt to be redeemed or if not then break its neck. A symbol of a cursed man.)

Ecclesiastes 6:3,   If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

1 Kings 14:11-13,  Him that dieth of Jeroboam in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat: for the LORD hath spoken it.  Arise thou therefore, get thee to thine own house: and when thy feet enter into the city, the child shall die.  And all Israel shall mourn for him, and bury him: for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found some good thing toward the LORD God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam.

Jeremiah 22:19, (Jehoiakim) He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

Isaiah 14:20, Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.  “renowned” to be published, proclaimed.

(Judgment on Lucifer showed that he was totally rejected by God)

Jeremiah 16:4-6, For thus saith the LORD concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are born in this place, and concerning their mothers that bare them, and concerning their fathers that begat them in this land;  They shall die of grievous deaths; they shall not be lamented; neither shall they be buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.  For thus saith the LORD, Enter not into the house of mourning, neither go to lament nor bemoan them: for I have taken away my peace from this people, saith the LORD, even lovingkindness and mercies.  Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them:

2 Samuel 21:1-14 We learn that a famine occured in the land of Israel and lasted for 3 years.  Why?  It was because of the bloody house of Saul and his slaying the Gibeonites.  We only know of it by what is written here in this chapter.  Saul in his zeal slew the peaceable Amorites whom the children of Israel swore in the days of Joshua (Josh. 9:3, 16-17) to protect.  First Samuel 31 closes out with the deaths of Saul and three of his sons.  The Philistine army took the head of Saul and sent it throughout their land.  They then took Saul’s body and of his sons and fastened to the wall in Beth-Shan.  Then the men of Jabesh-Gilead took those bodies down and brought them to Jabesh and burnt those bodies and buried them under a tree there instead of in Benjamin.  This is where the famine comes in as a result of that sin.

The sin of Saul was being visited upon the land unnoticed by King David.  It’s the cry of vengeance put to David by the Gibeonites here in our text mentioned above in 2 Samuel 21.  Saul was dead, however, but his was not settled by a proper burial.  Vengeance can still be claimed and the land punished.  Why? Well the blame can be against the men of Jabesh-Gilead, Israel and David because the matter had been left unsettled, 2 Sam. 21:14 proves that this is not conjecture,  “And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.”  In other words, the land was healed.  You see, there was a law in Israel for the burial of a criminal who had been hanged on a tree, he had to be buried the same day or the land or inheritance may be defiled.

 Deut. 21:22-23,  And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree:  His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

A crime was not settle until the criminal is buried out of sight.  Point: Christ became sin for us accused of several crimes even though He had committed no sin.  He was hanging on a tree for our crimes, our sins, thus He had to be buried in order to keep the land and inheritance undefiled.  In plainer words, so that no curse could be found.  Galatians 3:13,  Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

(Halilujah! we read, “and that he was buried.”)  The burial is Part of the Saving Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ for He had to be buried and buried the same day that He hung on the cross to die for man the creatures sin or we’d all be cursed.

 

V.  SATANIC BLINDNESS

 

2 Corinthians 4:3-4,  But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Professors, preachers, and many other of the Lord’s people are blinded by the Devil concerning the Scriptural, and spiritual significance of our Lord’s burial in the Gospel.  So what are we saying here at this juncture,? Simply that Christ had to be buried and to leave it out is nothing short of satanic blindness!  Christ did not rise from the cross but from the grave.  Remember the religious leaders cry concerning Christ getting off the cross then we will believe.  The Lord couldn’t come down off the cross or we’d all be cursed and go to hell for you cannot be saved apart from His burial.  Just as the virgin birth of the Lord Jesus Christ is imperative, inherently considered as part of the Gospel, for the Bible says, “How that CHRIST died for our sins” in 1 Corinthians 15:3.  He is the Christ of God, the divine Son of God or we would still be in our sins.  If He had our sin nature then He could not have qualified to be our Substitute!  (See Galatians 4:4.)

Matthew 27:39-44,   And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,  And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.  Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.  He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.  The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

It might also need to be added, that the Lord had to be tempted and tried in ALL points as we are and NOT to have sinned in order to qualify as the Redeemer Lord to die for our sins. (See Hebrews 4:15.)

 

VI.  SCRIPTURAL TO BE BURIED

 

Genesis 3:19,  In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Genesis 23:3-6,   And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying,  I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.  And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him,  Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead. 

2 Chronicles 26:23,  So Uzziah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, He is a leper: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead.

Ecclesiastes 3:20, All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

Matthew 26:12,  For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.

John 19:40,  Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

Acts 8:2, And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

Revelation 20:13,  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Not only are there physical burials in the Bible such as the burial of Christ and others, but there are also figurative burials spoken of as well.

VII.  THE SAVIOUR’S BURIAL 

 

Psalm 16:9-10, 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.  For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Isaiah 53:9,  And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

John 19:31, 38-42, The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.   And after this Joseph of Arimathæa, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.   And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.  Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.  Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.  There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.                                                                                                  

 

From these passages one can see two sides: Entrance Foretold & Exit Foretold.  In other words a Human Side and a Divine Side.

 

A) Human Side: The Jews wanted Jesus’ body to be taken away and dispose of it.  “He made his grave with the wicked.”  The wicked generation who took part in the death of Christ intended that His burial be disgraceful, buried between two thieves.

“He made” means to assign, appoint, designated or given over.  The way that we understand it is or we might either say, ‘His grave was appointed with the wicked’ or ‘They assigned Him to be buried with the wicked’ or planned or plotted.  The wicked generation intended His corpse because of hatred for Him to be buried with the other criminals.  It was a disgrace for a Jew to be denied an honorable burial.  Jehoiakim (Jer. 22:18-19) had his body cast into a ditch or dunghill.

 

B) A Divine Side: “And with the rich in his death” is what the Lord decided.  Two rich men Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea came to Christ to provide the tomb for the Saviour.  Joseph provided a sepulchre for Christ to be buried.  He is the subject here in Isaiah’s prophecy (Isa. 53:9).  Here in John 19:38-42 to the NT fulfillment of Isaiah.  God stepped in as these two men had craved the body of the Lord Jesus so Isaiah’ prophecy would be fulfill.

VI. THE VICTORIOUS NATURE OF CHRIST’S DEATH (Powerful Saviour)

1. His Death Wrought Victory Over Satan 

Genesis 3:15, And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

John 16:11,  Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Luke 22:53, When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

Colossians 2:15, And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.    

Hebrews 2:14-15, Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

 

     B) His Death Wrought Victory Over Sin

 

Besides verses given several times: (Mt. 26:28; Mk. 10:45; 1 Cor. 15:1-4; ect.)

 

John 19:30, When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

1 John 2:1,  And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

(This could not be a satisfaction for our sins had not Christ won the victory-Cross)

1 John 4:10,  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

 

    C. His Death Wrought Victory Over The System of This World

 

Luke 4:5-7, And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.  And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.  If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

1 John 2:15-17,  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

1 John 4:3-6,  And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.  Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.  They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.  We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

1 John 5:4-5, 19,  For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.  Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?  And we know that  we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

 

    D. His Death Wrought Victory Over Spiritual Death & Second Death

 

Genesis 2:17; 3:23-24,  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.  And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:  Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.  So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

John 5:24,  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Romans 8:7-8,  Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

1 Corinthians 2:14,  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Ephesians 2:1-3, 5,  AND you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;  Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Ephesians 4:17-18, This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,  Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

Hebrews 2:9,  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. 

Revelation 20:4-6,  And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.  But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.  Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

 

      1) Jesus Conquered The Strength of Death

 

Revelation 1:18,  I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

 

      2) Jesus Conquered The Sting of Death

 

1 Corinthians 15:25-26, 55-57,  For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.  The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?  The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.  But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

 

VII. THE VINDICATION NATURE OF CHRIST’S DELIVERANCE  (Pronounced Set Free)

    (Proof that someone or something is right, reasonable, or justified.)

     A. Vindication Is A Pardon And Settlement Based On A Perfect Sacrifice

 

Romans 4:24-25,  But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;  Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Philippians 2:8-11,  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

1 Timothy 3:16,  And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Hebrew 9:11-14, 24-28, But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;  Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.  For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:  How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:  Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;  For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.  And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:  So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation

 

     B. Vindication Is A Particular Satisfaction Based On A Perfect Sacrifice

He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.  By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.  And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:  But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;  From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.  For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.  Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;  And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.  Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.  Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

 

THE BODILY RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST!

 

1 Corinthians 15:4,  and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 

Matthew 28:5-6,  And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.  He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Mark 16:6,  And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

Luke 24:5-7,  And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?  He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,  Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

John 20:4-9,  So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.  And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,  And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.  Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.  For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

 

The Day of His Resurrection

 

On The Day That The Lord Jesus Rose From The Dead, He Made Five (5) Appearances:

 

1. The Appearance to Mary Magdalene:

John 20:11-18,   But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,  And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.  And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.  And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.  Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.  Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.  Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.  Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.

 

    2. He Appeared to The Women:

Matthew 28:9-10,    And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.  Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

 

    3. He Appeared to Peter:

Luke 24:34, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

    4. He Appeared Late That Evening to Two Disciples on Road to Emmaus:

Luke 24:19-31, And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:  And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.  But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.  Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;  And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.  And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.  Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:  Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?  And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.  And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.  But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.  And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.  And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

 

    5. He Appeared That Evening to A Number of Disciples:

John 20:19, Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

Luke 24:36-47,  And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.  But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.  And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?  Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.  And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.  And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?  And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.  And he took it, and did eat before them.  And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.  Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,  And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:  And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

John 20:24-29,   But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.  The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.  And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.  Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.  And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.  Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

Acts 1:3, To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

Acts 2:23-24 27, 31-32,  Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:  Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.  He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.  This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

Acts 3:14-15, 26,  But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you;  And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.  Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.

Acts 4:10, 33, Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.  And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

Acts 5:30,  The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.

Acts 10:39-41,  And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:  Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;  Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.

Acts 13:29-35, 37,  And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.  But God raised him from the dead: 31 And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.  And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,  God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.  And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.  Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

Acts 17:3, 31,  Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.  Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

Acts 26:22-23,  Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:  That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

Romans 1:1-4,  PAUL, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,  (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)  Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;  And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:

Romans 4:23-25, Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;  But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;  Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Romans 5:10,  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

Romans 6:4, 9-10, Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.  Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.  For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

Romans 8:11, 34,  But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.  Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Romans 10:9,  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 14:9,  For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

1 Corinthians 6:14,  And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.

1 Corinthians 15:4-9, 20  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:  And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:  After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.  After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.  And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.  For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 

Galatians 1:1, PAUL, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)

Ephesians 1:20,  Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

Colossians 2:12,  Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

Colossians 3:1, F ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

1 Thessalonians 1:10,  And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

1 Thessalonians 4:14, 4 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

2 Timothy 2:8, Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

Hebrews 13:20, Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting  covenant,

1 Peter 1:3, 21,  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Revelation 1:5, 18,  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,... I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

 

AGAIN,

1 Corinthians 15:1-4,  MOREOVER, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

1 Peter 3:18,  For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

“Quickened” means made alive: Numbers 16:30, 33.

 

You are saved by believing the Gospel of The Lord Jesus Christ.  All that we are told to remember is the Gospel after we receive Christ.

 

Acts 16:30-31,  Came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,  And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?  And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
